佛教故事，目蓮尊者，很有神通，其母生前作惡多端，死後墮在餓鬼道受苦。以自己的神通力，目蓮沒法救度母親，求如來佛祖扶助。佛祖指點目蓮設盂蘭盆會，供養十方僧侶，並由諸天菩薩施法。後來其母親得脫苦海，超升樂幫。
