漢朝朱買臣年輕時家境十分貧苦，其妻嫌其窮而拋棄他，跟著別的男人走了。買臣人窮志不窮，發憤攻讀。蒼天不負苦心人，後來功名成，官居會稽太守。其妻知情後，趕快回來要求複合。買臣騎在馬上把水倒在地下，要其妻再收回來，以示夫妻不能再複合。
